Black and White… and Color

This one was just a gimmick, but friends on Facebook and thelucaslife.com seemed to like it. We don’t normally let our 2 year old have lollipops because she likes to run around with them, but this time she was careful. She showed me her candy-stained tongue and I took a picture of it so she could see it on the LCD. I then uploaded and modified it using only Lightroom. To see how far from reality this image is, just take a look at the original below. As you can see, her tongue was not nearly as green as I made it. Here are the steps I took:
- desaturated image (global)
- adjusted tones to taste (global)
- painted brightness back into eyes (brush)
- painted clarity and sharpness to eyes (brush)
- painted desaturation with green color selection onto tongue (brush)
There is a interesting feature of the brush tool where you can change the color of an area in an image by selecting a color from a palette and paint with it using desaturation. You can control the hue of the color with the color selection palette and the opacity using the saturation slider. What I did was a global desaturation first then painted with desaturate. If I hadn’t done the first desaturation (to get rid of the tongue color completely), reducing the opacity of the green would have brought back some of the red.
So the truth is out. None of that green is actually real. And I didn’t even have to go to Photoshop!
