Tampa Museum of Art, Damaged by Roadies

with 2 comments

After the Collective Soul concert last Saturday, roadies dropped equipment on the edge of the Tampa Museum of Art and broke two glass walls. There was a decent write-up on TBO with a couple photographs. I went back this morning to see the repair and it looks like the walls will be restored by Saturday’s grand opening. These photographs were shot with my Olympus E-P1 micro four thirds camera. For daylight photography, this thing is a fantastic compact. I’m enjoying not having to lug around my DSLR for casual shooting.

I didn’t notice this lettering on the wall before.

I think they might need to cut that piece down.

This is the museum store being stocked and readied. Notice the row of books in the foreground. It is titled “Stanley Saitowitz: Buildings and Projects.” Saitowitz is the architecture firm that built the new museum. The manager of the project wrote me a nice note the other day saying my photographs had “succinctly captured the architectural essence of the project.” It was a real honor to be payed such a compliment by a well-respected artist in another medium. To see some of their amazing work check out arch daily. And I found a lot of great museum related links in their twitter feed @saitowitz. (See update below as well.)

When I finished shooting the images above, I turned around to this scene. Just a couple minutes prior the park was completely empty. It must have been a school outing. The equipment in the Curtis Hixon Park playground is very unique and modern. I heard one kid shout, “This is the best playground ever!”

UPDATE: The following video with Stanley Saitowitz, design principal for the architecture firm responsible for the new TMA, was found at Arch Daily.

  1. I suspect that the damage to the glass was not a result of an accident due to the roadie, or due an intentional smash from a roadie who hates art museums, but was a result of bad karma on the museum.
